Easy Tips on How to Reduce Home Humidity

We all experience horrible humidity whether in a year-round, wetter climate, or even in a seasonal summer climate. Humidity is one of the problems we complain about in our homes and even when we step outside. If you’re battling with a humidity crisis in your home, it can be quite a pain. The condensation formed by a humid area can lead to wood rot, damaged walls (with or without wall paper). Mold and spores add to a variety of health issues, especially in the elderly and children. Allergies and breathing difficultly can ensue should anyone breathe them in, causing asthma or other breathing related problems. Another significant problem is algae forming from the humid-related moisture. However, humidity can be battled with a few different procedures, ensuring a less humid home, sparing you of health issues or damage to the home.

Tips on How to Reduce Home Humidity

Finding a method that works for you in reducing humidity in a home is very important in keeping a home dry, and free of mold. Following one of the mentioned steps below can increase the chances that humidity will decrease, making the living space comfortable for everyone:

1. Ventilate the Areas with an Exhaust Fan

How to Reduce Home Humidity: Ventilate the Areas with an Exhaust FanUsing an exhaust or ventilation fan can help create airflow through the home. By moving the suffocating, humid air through the exhaust fan, it allows cooler air to enter the room giving some relief. Depending on the area of your home that struggles with a humidity issue—such as a bathroom or kitchen—can be difficult. Exhaust fans can prevent such a situation in both of the areas. Keeping control on the areas that create the most moisture—for example, the shower, keeps houses mold free. It is, however, very important these fans vent outside the home to cease the possibility of re-adding moisture in the home.

Having an exhaust fan in areas that remain more populated, such as a sitting area, or dining room, can help to prevent added humidity. As humans, our circulatory system adds humidity to the area on exhaling or even speaking. Reducing this added moisture with an exhaust fan can help keep the home humidity free.

2. No Exhaust Fan? Open the Windows

How to Reduce Home Humidity: No Exhaust Fan? Open the WindowsExhaust ventilation fans can be a little pricey. So, if spending the extra money is not possible, there is a very simple solution: open the windows. The kitchen usually generates heat when using the range, or oven, adding extra humidity to the home. If the bathroom has a small window, try showering with it cracked, even if you have a built-in exhaust fan in the ceiling. This will help to reduce the moisture created by steam of a shower, and more air can exit the room at once.

3. Vent the Attic with a Ventilation or Fan System

How to Reduce Home Humidity: Vent the Attic with a Ventilation or Fan SystemAs hot air tends to rise, the humidity level of the house depends on what is usually trapped in the highest layer of a household. By installing vents or an attic fan, the humid air is able to escape the home, allowing a decrease in the home humidity.

4. Dehumidifiers for the Win

How to Reduce Home Humidity: Dehumidifiers for the WinDehumidifiers are, definitely, one of the most effective ways to decrease humidity in the home. This is a very easy solution to a humidity problem. A dehumidifier works by taking the warm, moist air in a home, running it through coolant inside of the dehumidifier, and cool air exits, helping to lower the moisture level. There are several different dehumidifiers to choose from, depending on your budget when in the market. Among the several brands, there are refrigerative and desiccant dehumidifiers. A refrigerative dehumidifier works better at a higher heat, higher humidity situation, while desiccant dehumidifiers are for a cooler, less cooler climate. If financially possible, it is suggested that you get both kinds because they work best together to create an all-around comfortable environment.

5. Increase Indoor Temperature Because Warm Air Can Hold More Moisture

How to Reduce Home Humidity: Increase Indoor Temperature Because Warm Air Can Hold More MoistureIt may sound a little redundant, but increasing the temperature of a room will help to decrease the humidity. Warm air retains moisture, which can battle humidity allowing a decrease in the relative humidity, eventually decreasing the excess condensation.

6. Cool it Down with the AC – The Best Answer to How to Reduce Home Humidity

How to Reduce Home Humidity: Cool it Down with the AC - The Best Answer to How to Reduce Home HumidityLiving in an area where heat and humidity are unbearable, the best option may be to turn on the AC. Many of the air conditioners have a setting that can absorb the moisture in the air while cooling off the home. However, this suggestion can be both costly in the purchase and electric bill.

If you do have an air conditioner installed, make sure that the drain lines and drip pans remain obstruction-and dirt-free. Maintaining proper care of the air conditioner will ensure a longer life without much maintenance issues. Air conditioning pans and lines should be left clean and unobstructed to maximize the functionality of the air conditioner.

7. Plants May Be Pretty, but Also a Pain

How to Reduce Home Humidity: Plants May Be Pretty, but Also a PainPlants may help for the cleansing and breathability of the air inside of your home, but they may not help with humidity. If you usually keep houseplants inside, during the more humid days or months, it could best to put the plants outside or seclude them to a separated room. Because plants usually release moisture in the air (similar to our breathing), they can add moisture creating more humidity than you’d want. However, some plants may absorb humidity too, such as a reed palm or English ivy.

8. Turn Off the Humidifier or Vaporizer

How to Reduce Home Humidity: Turn Off the Humidifier or VaporizerJust as a dehumidifier removes humidity from the air, a humidifier or vaporizer, adds extra humidity to the air. When the home is becoming too humid while one of machines are running, the best thing to do is turn it off. This will halt the humidity being added to the air. It may not even need to be shut off completely, rather just turn it down.

9. Keep Gutters and Downspouts Clear and Free of Clutter

How to Reduce Home Humidity: Keep Gutters and Downspouts Clear and Free of ClutterMake sure to regularly clean downspouts and clutter so they can drain properly. Having clutter in a downspout or gutter can lead to blockages. These blockages will not allow water to properly drain, giving way to excess moisture sitting on or next to the roof. Should there be some sort of obstruction in the way of the drainage, water can pool near the foundation.

10. Fresh-cut Firewood to Regulate Humidity

How to Reduce Home Humidity: Fresh-cut Firewood to Regulate HumidityFresh-cut firewood pieces are usually very moist. When storing these logs indoors, they will help to lower the humidity of a room. The more that the water evaporates from the wood, it will lower the humidity to an equal point. This is called the equilibrium moisture content. This process actually changes the relative humidity point, thus lowering the humidity in the home.

11. Maintain the Humidity of Bathroom, Kitchen, and Laundry Room

How to Reduce Home Humidity: Maintain the Humidity of Bathroom, Kitchen, and Laundry RoomThere are certain little things that can be done to lower the humidity in a home, all by regular bathroom and kitchen habits. When cooking in the kitchen, it can be a little humid and warm from all of the cooking. Try to cover the food whenever possible to contain the steam when hot. When taking a shower, try lowering the water temperature, and lessening the amount of time you’re in the shower. This will control the humidity that is found in the bathroom during a shower. Finally, make sure that the dryer is ventilating to the outside of the house. Dryers naturally create humidity just by their warmth and drying of wet clothing.

12. Maintain a Consistent Level of Comfort

How to Reduce Home Humidity: Maintain a Consistent Level of ComfortHow to reduce home humidity is probably not a thought that crosses the mind often, especially in looking for a healthier living. In fact, most just accept humidity both inside and out as a fact of life. But, there is relief and hope for those who battle the summer months or wetter climates. Because humidity has a higher impact on health, it is important to consider one of the options that decrease humidity in a home, thus decreasing mold, mildew, and condensation. No one wants algae on the walls while entertaining, also. One thing to consider is a humidity level between thirty to fifty percent is the ideal level for any home. This allows for a more breathable environment and a lack of moisture on the walls. There are a few ways to test the humidity in your home, that will answer the question of how to reduce home humidity.

Focusing on visual hints of humidity, such as condensation on the windows, wetness on the walls, and mildew growth are some of the main components to determine if your home is too humid. Also, you may want to note the health conditions of those living in the home. If it is not allergy season, but there are some with a constant illness, it may be because of mold and mildew spores.

A hygrometer can also be very helpful in determining humidity in the home. These tools are available at most hardware or home improvement stores. These meters will test the humidity in the home, giving you immediate results to help you fix any humidity issue.

Either way, decreasing humidity is what is best for your home and health, bringing comfort to any location. So now you now very well how to reduce home humidity!
