An oil filled heater contains a thermal fluid or diathermic oil, that is engineered. The oil is warmed, which produces radiant heat, which is transferred to the air in the room through the process of convection. Because it takes longer to heat up a liquid than it does a wire element, these heaters do take longer to heat up your space in the first instance. However, oil has the benefit of being able to retain heat really well, so, should the temperature drop in your room, they are more efficient in bringing it back up. What is more, you can even enjoy the warmth of an oil filled heater for a while after you turn it off since the oil is made to cool down slowly. This is different to convector heaters since a convector heater doesn’t retain heat. These factors make oil filled heaters really energy efficient and thus will help keep fuel bills down.

In terms of running costs, oil filled radiant heaters are much more efficient than standard electric heaters and because they have individual thermostats, you can really tailor the heating in your home to be exactly what you need. For example, you might want your lounge to be warmer than your bedroom. Having individual heaters with their own thermostats allows you to be really specific about the temperature of each room and when they are in use.

Oil filled heaters also have many advantages over other portable heaters like fan heaters or ceramic heaters. For one, they are quieter. What to Look for in an Oil Filled Radiant Room Heater?

There are a few things to bear in mind before deciding upon which oil filled heater to buy:

The room:

Think carefully about the space you are wanting to heat and whether or not the heater you’re looking at is adequate for the size of your room. Most specifications will give you information about how many square feet the heater is suitable for so it is a good idea to work out how many square feet of space you have. Your heater won’t be efficient if it is too small for the space and will end up costing you lots more in running costs as it will be more difficult for the thermostat to reach the desired temperature. Also, if you are wanting something to heat up a draughty or uninsulated space like a garage, then it might be wise to consider other heating options as an oil filled heater might not be the most efficient for warming up the space.

Hot to touch:

Unlike infrared heaters covered in cool-to-touch cabinets, most of the oil filled radiators are very hot to touch and therefore can be unsafe for use around children or animals. If you fall into either of these categories then it’s wise choosing a heater that is cool to the touch, even when in use. Heaters that are taller are usually cooler to the touch as they have a larger surface area over which to distribute the heat.

Safety features:

Many oil filled radiant heaters come with safety features such as an auto shut-off switch that automatically turns the heater off should it get too hot. Conversely, many also have an anti-freeze feature for cooler environments.

Although very safe in general, oil filled heaters can be a fire risk if they tip over and are covered with combustible materials like a towel or sheet. Lots of heaters come with a feature that automatically switches off the heater if it is tipped over. It is also wise not to put any objects within 3 feet of your heater.

Portability:

This is something to consider if you intend to use the heater in different rooms. Oil filled heaters can be incredibly heavy and many have wheels to enable them to be moved more easily. Be aware that they should be completely cooled before moving.

Material:

Many manufacturers sell oil filled radiant heaters that are made from a rust-resistant material like enamel for durability. It is worth looking into the material used as this can affect how durable the product is.

How We Picked and Tested

As previously mentioned, we have spent over 72 hours researching the products in our Best Oil filled Heater guide and it was a time-consuming but thorough process that involved lots of different steps along the way.

We began our research by trawling through numerous consumer reviews of existing products. By reading these reviews we were able to gain an understanding of what people are wanting when they purchase an oil filled radiant heater. Much to our surprise, we noticed that many eco-conscious consumers had kept their focus on reducing their carbon footprints even when using a heater. This 1500-watt oil radiator heater weighs in at a hefty 21.9lbs and measures 14 x 6 x 25 inches and is therefore suitable for medium to large rooms. It is manufactured in China from a rust-resistant and durable material. This is the heaviest product in our Top Ten and it doesn’t have a carry handle, which means it is less portable than many others on our list. It does, however, come with DeLonghi’s patented smart-snap wheels, which allow it to be moved more easily.

Programmability and Features:

One of the great things about this heater is that it doesn’t need to be assembled. Also, the oil reservoir is sealed permanently; so it never leaks and doesn’t need refilling. It has an adjustable thermostat and 3 heat settings on its manual controls but there is no digital display.

Although there is no timer or remote, this heater shuts off automatically when the desired room temperature is reached. There is also a ComforTemp button, which helps to cut your electricity bills by maintaining the room temperature automatically.

Best for Small to Medium Rooms: DeLonghi TRN0812T Oil filled Heater

Why is This Product Best for Small to Medium Rooms?

Since we considered the best for large rooms, we needed to identify the best oil filled heater for small to medium rooms as well. With this in mind, we looked specifically at products with a power of 1200 watts and found 2 heaters with this specification in our shortlist of 17. These were the DeLonghi TRN0812T and the Comfort Zone Oil-Filled Electric Radiator Heater. With our search narrowed down to just two products we then decided to complete more rigorous tests and review them both again in order to find the best fit.

The DeLonghi product caught our eyes again as it had way more reviews on Amazon, so we had a wealth of information available to us from consumers. In fact, it had over 9 times the number of reviews than the Comfort Zone heater as well as a better rating and review frequency. This oil space heater also had more positive features. It had 18 in comparison to the Comfort Zone’s 15 and made it to 3rd in our shortlist list of 17 with this number. Finally, the price of the DeLonghi was also lower so it is much more feature-rich for its price.

One thing to love about this product is the fact that you have 96 different setting combinations! You can change the watts, the desired temperature as well as have different settings for night use and day use! It also doesn’t compromise on safety and can even be used in a bathroom, thanks to its GFI plug.

This 1200-watt oil heater weighs 17.3lbs and measures 7 x 18 x 15 inches making it suitable for a small to medium room. It is the 3rd heaviest product in our Top 10 but doesn’t have wheels or a carry handle, which makes moving it more difficult. It does, however, have a convenient GFI plug meaning it can be used safely in a bathroom. It is made from rust-resistant materials and comes fully assembled so you can enjoy being warm in no time!

Programmability and Features:

There are an impressive 96 setting combinations so you can really tailor this radiator’s output to your needs. There are 3 main heat settings of 500W, 700W and 1200W but it also allows you to program it for the amount of time you require and includes the possibility of being able to choose different times throughout the day or night. So, despite not having an eco-mode, you can really get the most out of your heater without wasting electricity.

Safety-wise, this is a great oil filled radiator as it is not lacking in safety features. It shuts off automatically when the desired temperature is reached and it also restarts after a power outage. There is also the bonus of a tip-over switch and an anti-freeze setting, which kicks into action at around 42°F. You can also rest assured with this heater as, unlike many on the market, this one is cool to the touch.

As with our Number 1 Pick, this oil heater has manual controls and doesn’t come with a digital display or remote control but, unless this is something you’re desperate for, it doesn’t impact in the heater’s function in any way.

Other factors:

This oil heater has a 6’ cord and operates silently. This heater reaches our second spot in terms of the number of reviews it has at 840. It has an average rating of 3.4 out of 5, which is quite a bit lower than our Top Pick. However, most of the negative reviews center on the product stopping working prematurely so it is worth ensuring you purchase this product with a good warranty. If you work in an office where others like the temperature to be on the cooler side, it’s worth considering a heater for your personal space. This Costway oil filled radiator heater is ideal for keeping under your desk and keeping you warm.

Initially, we had three top contenders for this category, that is to say, heaters that were in or below the 700-watt range. We picked this Costway as the best option for personal use because it was the highest rated heater in not only this category but in all the categories of heater we researched in our shortlist of 17. Its rating of 4.4. out of 5 was 0.3 higher than any other in our shortlist, which definitely gives it the edge! It is obvious, therefore, that consumers are very happy with its overall quality and performance. In terms of review frequency, this was also much better than the other contenders in this range, meaning it is more popular.

It is lightweight and has a carry handle for easy movement between places at home or work. It is also silent and so won’t disturb you when you’re working or if you use it in the bedroom overnight. Finally, since it is designed to be smaller and for personal use, it is easy to store away for the summer months!

It measures a tidy 12 x 5.5 x 14 inches and is therefore compact enough to have in small spaces like under a work desk. Its metal casing bears manual controls which allow you to adjust the thermostat to your desired temperature. The carry handle allows for great maneuverability too.

Programmability and Features:

The only assembly required is to put on the snap-on feet, something which is very easy and takes a matter of seconds. The heating settings are operated manually and are simple in that there is a minimum to maximum dial to adjust.

As this is for personal use, it is fairly basic in operation: there is no time or digital display with a remote. This doesn’t mean it compromises on safety features, however. If the heater becomes lopsided or too hot it will shut off automatically. It is definitely worth pointing out, however, that this radiator is hot to the touch and therefore might not be suitable for spaces where children or pets have access.

Our value pick has been chosen because it provides the highest value when considering the price per feature. Of all the products on our list, this one has 23 out of 27 identified positive features. This makes it the most feature-rich product, not only in our Top 10 but in out of all 17 products in our shortlist. To compare, the next highest number of features is 19 so it has 4 more positive features!

Capacity and Design:

When you’re looking for a portable oil filled radiator heater, you’re usually wanting something lightweight. At 6lbs, the Optimus H-6003 definitely fills this requirement. It is also one of the most compact heaters in our Top 10 and measures 16 x 6 x 15 inches. Although it doesn’t have wheels, it does have a carry handle and its weight means that moving it around is not a problem.

At only 700 watts, this heater is designed for personal use and so would not be suitable for heating anything more than a small room. It operates with manual controls and is made from heavy-gauge sheet metal, which is durable.

Programmability and Features:

Similar to the Costway, this portable heater has a minimum to maximum heat dial to change the heat settings. It does have some assembly required but it is simply a matter of installing the feet. As it is simply designed for personal use, it doesn’t have many of the features of the bigger and more powerful heaters; there is no timer, remote or digital display.

In terms of safety, it is worth bearing in mind that this heater does not have an auto shut-off function or a tip-over switch. It does, however, have a power light so that you can see clearly if it is switched on and it is not hot to the touch, unlike the Costway.

Other factors:

This electric oil heater has over 525 reviews, which puts it in third place for the number of reviews. It does, unfortunately, have the 2nd lowest rating in our Top 10 and scores an average of 3.2 out of 5. Most of the negative reviews relate to its inability to raise the temperature in the rooms they required so it is really worth working out the space you need to heat up. This heater really works best when you’re in close proximity to it such as under a desk to keep your feet warm. The noise won’t disturb your work either so you can carry on working at your desk with cozy toes!

Capacity and Design:

The DeLonghi TRD40615E is the heaviest of all of the radiant heaters in our Top 10 and weighs a whopping 26.6lbs. It is designed to heat a medium to large space and measures 16.4 x 10.3 x 26.1. Don’t let its weight put you off however as this heater really packs a punch when it comes to warming a room, even a garage. It operates at 1500 watts but has an innovative design that creates more surface area and thus takes less time to heat up your space. It does have a carry handle and wheels for easier maneuverability and is made of a rust-resistant metal meaning it is durable and built to last.

Programmability and Features:

This DeLonghi has the same number of features as our Top Pick but, unlike our Top Pick, has electronic controls, a digital display and a 24-hour timer. It can be programmed to 3 different heat settings (700W/800W/1500W) and also has an eco-mode.

As far as safety is concerned, the TRD40615E has auto shutoff, auto restart and is not hot to the touch. It also has an anti-freeze setting should the room temperature fall too low. It lacks the tip-over feature as seen on our Number 1, however.

Other factors:

If a long cord length is really important to you, then this heater has the longest in our Top 10, with 6’3’’ of cord. There were just over 500 reviews for this product at the time of research, which puts it in 4th position in terms of review numbers. The average consumer rating isn’t as good as some of our other reviewed products and comes in at 3.8 out of 5. Many of the negative reviews outline noise as a factor and it is clear that this is an issue for many consumers. If you’re not intending to use this in a quiet space like an office or bedroom, then this might not be an issue.

This is the 2nd most expensive heater after our Top Pick and costs around $108. It is UL listed and does have a 1-year warranty.

No 7: NewAir AH-400 Space Heater

Capacity and Design:

Our Number 7 best oil filled heater is the NewAir AH-400, which also falls into the portable category. It weighs 6.45lbs, making it one of the lightest products in our Top 10. This heater has the lowest output at 400 watts so it’s definitely worth noting that this is a heater best designed for personal use only, such as for keeping under the desk.

As well as being lightweight, this space heater has carry handles to aid maneuverability.

Programmability and Features:

The NewAir AH-400 is really simple in its control features. It has only 1 heat setting. There is no timer, remote or eco mode. Safety-wise, it does have auto shutoff and a tip-over setting, but it doesn’t have an auto restart feature or anti-freeze capability and it is hot to the touch.

Other factors:

This heater’s simple design means it only has 10 positive features out of a possible 27, which makes the price of around $58 seem more expensive if we take into account the cost-per-feature.

Review-wise, it had 336 reviews at the time of research and an average rating of 3.7 out of 5, which is on the lower side. For peace of mind, however, it is UL, ETL and Intertek listed and does come with a 1-year warranty.

I like this heater as it is slimmer than many others on our list and can fit into tight spaces. If you’re considering buying this oil filled heater, it is important to consider the output of it as it is not as powerful as many of the other personal-use heaters in our Top 10 and therefore might not heat up your space as efficiently as others.

No 8: Tang Kula 5-Fin Radiant Heater, 1500w

Capacity and Design:

At 18lbs and measuring 14 x 10 x 25.6, this is a hefty piece of kit. It is a powerful machine, however, and operates at 1500 watts, making it suitable for a medium to large room. For easier transportation, it does come with wheels and a carry handle.

Programmability and Features:

The manual controls can be set to 3 different heat settings (600W/900W/1500W), but there is no eco-mode or timer. Although it doesn’t have the anti-freeze function of many other heaters in our shortlist, it does have a tip-over switch and is not hot to the touch, making it much more appealing to families and animal lovers.

Other factors:

This oil filled heater fell down in our rankings due to the fact that it has the fewest number of reviews, with only 54 at the time of research. It is definitely worth noting, however, that its average rating is 4.1 out of 5, which makes it one of the best-rated products in our Top Ten. The Tangkula is pretty reasonably priced too at just $41.99! Aside from that, it is capable of providing all the benefits that an oil filled radiator has to do.
