Why Use Oil Filled Radiant Room Heaters

Oil filled heaters come in a vast array of designs with a lot of different features to boast of. Though they are ultimately used to heat up a room or space and all have the same basic working principle. So, how do they work and how efficient are they?

An oil filled heater contains a thermal fluid or diathermic oil, that is engineered. The oil is warmed, which produces radiant heat, which is transferred to the air in the room through the process of convection. Because it takes longer to heat up a liquid than it does a wire element, these heaters do take longer to heat up your space in the first instance. However, oil has the benefit of being able to retain heat really well, so, should the temperature drop in your room, they are more efficient in bringing it back up. What is more, you can even enjoy the warmth of an oil filled heater for a while after you turn it off since the oil is made to cool down slowly. This is different to convector heaters since a convector heater doesn’t retain heat. These factors make oil filled heaters really energy efficient and thus will help keep fuel bills down.

In terms of running costs, oil filled radiant heaters are much more efficient than standard electric heaters and because they have individual thermostats, you can really tailor the heating in your home to be exactly what you need. For example, you might want your lounge to be warmer than your bedroom. Having individual heaters with their own thermostats allows you to be really specific about the temperature of each room and when they are in use.

Oil filled heaters also have many advantages over other portable heaters like fan heaters or ceramic heaters. For one, they are quieter. Also, as oil filled heaters heat the room through convection, they distribute the heat much more evenly and pleasantly and there are no hot or cool spots in the room. They also don’t dry the air out, unlike fan heaters and need very little maintenance and cleaning.

Finally, oil filled radiant heaters are pretty much risk-free. There are no exposed heating elements, flames or fumes and so they are less likely to cause issues like a fire. Also, the built-in thermostat means that they automatically turn off if they get too hot.

What to Look for in an Oil Filled Radiant Room Heater?

There are a few things to bear in mind before deciding upon which oil filled heater to buy:

The room:

Think carefully about the space you are wanting to heat and whether or not the heater you’re looking at is adequate for the size of your room. Most specifications will give you information about how many square feet the heater is suitable for so it is a good idea to work out how many square feet of space you have. Your heater won’t be efficient if it is too small for the space and will end up costing you lots more in running costs as it will be more difficult for the thermostat to reach the desired temperature. Also, if you are wanting something to heat up a draughty or uninsulated space like a garage, then it might be wise to consider other heating options as an oil filled heater might not be the most efficient for warming up the space.

Hot to touch:

Unlike infrared heaters covered in cool-to-touch cabinets, most of the oil filled radiators are very hot to touch and therefore can be unsafe for use around children or animals. If you fall into either of these categories then it’s wise choosing a heater that is cool to the touch, even when in use. Heaters that are taller are usually cooler to the touch as they have a larger surface area over which to distribute the heat.

Safety features:

Many oil filled radiant heaters come with safety features such as an auto shut-off switch that automatically turns the heater off should it get too hot. Conversely, many also have an anti-freeze feature for cooler environments.

Although very safe in general, oil filled heaters can be a fire risk if they tip over and are covered with combustible materials like a towel or sheet. Lots of heaters come with a feature that automatically switches off the heater if it is tipped over. It is also wise not to put any objects within 3 feet of your heater.

Portability:

This is something to consider if you intend to use the heater in different rooms. Oil filled heaters can be incredibly heavy and many have wheels to enable them to be moved more easily. Be aware that they should be completely cooled before moving.

Material:

Many manufacturers sell oil filled radiant heaters that are made from a rust-resistant material like enamel for durability. It is worth looking into the material used as this can affect how durable the product is.

How We Picked and Tested

As previously mentioned, we have spent over 72 hours researching the products in our Best Oil filled Heater guide and it was a time-consuming but thorough process that involved lots of different steps along the way.

We began our research by trawling through numerous consumer reviews of existing products. By reading these reviews we were able to gain an understanding of what people are wanting when they purchase an oil filled radiant heater. Much to our surprise, we noticed that many eco-conscious consumers had kept their focus on reducing their carbon footprints even when using a heater. It was just as important for users to read both negative and positive reviews as they both give very different insights into what people want, need and get from the different oil filled heaters on the market. We read over 10,000 user reviews for this step alone! By the end of this research process, we had analyzed over 40 different oil filled radiant heaters in an extremely thorough way and knew their advantages and drawbacks inside out!

From the products we analyzed in our research, we gathered a shortlist containing the 17 oil-filled heaters that we considered to be the best and that we wanted to look at in more depth. So, with our list of 17 in hand, we visited store pages selling each product to see what information we could gather. By reading their product descriptions and specifications in numerous places, we were able to determine the typical features of each product. We also double checked these by reading individual critic reviews to ensure the product information was really accurate.

For the next step, we involved a diverse group of volunteers to test each specific model from the 17 in our shortlist and asked them to provide us with their personal feedback. We compared their final product-test reviews with our initial research data in order to find out which ten products among the 17 were the best. Once we had our list of ten products, we ranked them into a Top 10 order, which you will see below.

Our Top Ten Product List

Our research led us to understand the features that oil filled radiant room heaters can have – the same process we followed when reviewing humidifiers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, carpet and vacuum cleaners, and more household goods right here on The Soothing Air. From this in-depth process, we found a possible 27 different positive features. We found most of these features on the product manuals and specifications. We also made sure to include features that we discovered through our research as things that were really important to users when they’ve reviewed the products.

We also feel that is important to look at product reviews in conjunction with the frequency of which each product was reviewed. If a product is reviewed frequently and positively, we can be sure that this is something that people are buying often and are happy with their purchase. By looking at products in this we were able to determine and exclude obsolete heaters from our list so that consumers can find an accurate guide to the best oil filled radiant room heaters of 2018. So, with the process complete, we are now ready to present our Top Ten products.

Why is This Product Best for Small to Medium Rooms?

Small but perfectly formed

This model is perfect for smaller rooms. It is small itself, but still comes with an amazing 96 different feature settings. Although it lacks digital controls, it does come with a tonne of safety features.

Since we considered the best for large rooms, we needed to identify the best oil filled heater for small to medium rooms as well. With this in mind, we looked specifically at products with a power of 1200 watts and found 2 heaters with this specification in our shortlist of 17. These were the DeLonghi TRN0812T and the Comfort Zone Oil-Filled Electric Radiator Heater. With our search narrowed down to just two products we then decided to complete more rigorous tests and review them both again in order to find the best fit.

The DeLonghi product caught our eyes again as it had way more reviews on Amazon, so we had a wealth of information available to us from consumers. In fact, it had over 9 times the number of reviews than the Comfort Zone heater as well as a better rating and review frequency. This oil space heater also had more positive features. It had 18 in comparison to the Comfort Zone’s 15 and made it to 3rd in our shortlist list of 17 with this number. Finally, the price of the DeLonghi was also lower so it is much more feature-rich for its price.

One thing to love about this product is the fact that you have 96 different setting combinations! You can change the watts, the desired temperature as well as have different settings for night use and day use! Initially, we had three top contenders for this category, that is to say, heaters that were in or below the 700-watt range. We picked this Costway as the best option for personal use because it was the highest rated heater in not only this category but in all the categories of heater we researched in our shortlist of 17. Finally, since it is designed to be smaller and for personal use, it is easy to store away for the summer months!

Detailed Review

best oil filled heater:

Capacity and Design:

Though not the lightest of all the oil heaters in our Top 10, at 8.6lbs this Costway 700W mini portable is light enough to move wherever you desire but also sturdy enough not to be knocked over. It measures a tidy 12 x 5.5 x 14 inches and is therefore compact enough to have in small spaces like under a work desk. Its metal casing bears manual controls which allow you to adjust the thermostat to your desired temperature. The carry handle allows for great maneuverability too.

Programmability and Features:

The only assembly required is to put on the snap-on feet, something which is very easy and takes a matter of seconds. The heating settings are operated manually and are simple in that there is a minimum to maximum dial to adjust.

As this is for personal use, it is fairly basic in operation: there is no time or digital display with a remote. This doesn’t mean it compromises on safety features, however. If the heater becomes lopsided or too hot it will shut off automatically. It is definitely worth pointing out, however, that this radiator is hot to the touch and therefore might not be suitable for spaces where children or pets have access.

Other factors:

This Costway oil filled heater has a fantastic average rating of 4.4 out of 5, coming from 85 reviews at the time of research. It also has a good review frequency, meaning that it is purchased frequently and consumers are happy with their purchase. Given its intended use for personal space, the cord is shorter than others in our Top 10.

It comes with a price tag of around $40.99, which is the lowest of all products in our Top 10, but this is to be expected with its intended use for smaller spaces. Again, due to its design for personal use, it isn’t as feature-rich as other heaters in this guide. It does, however, have 12 positive features, which isn’t the lowest in our Top 10.

Pros:

  • Lightweight
  • Has a carry handle
  • Excellent average rating
  • Good review frequency
  • Good safety features
  • Low price

Cons:

  • Hot to the touch
  • Negative reviews about it breaking prematurely – but DeLonghi do offer a 7-year warranty.

Verdict:

Whether working in a large office with a cooler temperature than you’re comfortable with, or you’re sitting at a desk at home, this personal heater is ideal for warming up your space. It has excellent reviews and an excellent warranty for peace of mind.

Value Pick: PELONIS NY1507-14A Radiator Heater (Digital)

Why is This Product Our Value Pick?

A popular choice

This heater is rated really highly by many customers. It is great value for money, and it is stylish, whilst also having the latest digital controls and LCD display. A firm favourite.

Our value pick has been chosen because it provides the highest value when considering the price per feature. Of all the products on our list, this one has 23 out of 27 identified positive features. This makes it the most feature-rich product, not only in our Top 10 but in out of all 17 products in our shortlist. To compare, the next highest number of features is 19 so it has 4 more positive features!

Cost-wise, it is also very reasonably priced – the price tag of around $70 makes it one of the cheapest among all of the 1500-watt oil heaters we’ve researched. Despite all its great features and its low price, it has only received around 200 reviews. When we have heaters with over 2000 reviews, this just falls short in terms of popularity. In addition, the Pelonis NY1507-14A doesn’t have a cool-touch body, making it a little inconvenient and unsafe if we compare to other products on our list. Despite this, this oil filled heater is definitely a good buy as you certainly get your money’s worth due to its price-to-feature ratio.

As well as being lightweight, this space heater has carry handles to aid maneuverability.

Programmability and Features:

The NewAir AH-400 is really simple in its control features. It has only 1 heat setting. There is no timer, remote or eco mode. Safety-wise, it does have auto shutoff and a tip-over setting, but it doesn’t have an auto restart feature or anti-freeze capability and it is hot to the touch.

Other factors:

This heater’s simple design means it only has 10 positive features out of a possible 27, which makes the price of around $58 seem more expensive if we take into account the cost-per-feature.

Review-wise, it had 336 reviews at the time of research and an average rating of 3.7 out of 5, which is on the lower side. For peace of mind, however, it is UL, ETL and Intertek listed and does come with a 1-year warranty.

Pros:

  • Silent operation
  • UT, ETL and Intertek listed
  • Simple controls
  • Lightweight

Cons:

  • Lowest power in our Top 10

Verdict:

I like this heater as it is slimmer than many others on our list and can fit into tight spaces. If you’re considering buying this oil filled heater, it is important to consider the output of it as it is not as powerful as many of the other personal-use heaters in our Top 10 and therefore might not heat up your space as efficiently as others.

The manual controls can be set to 3 different heat settings (600W/900W/1500W), but there is no eco-mode or timer. A List of Other Best Oil Filled Heater We Tested

Oil Heater Maintenance Tips

The great thing about oil filled radiant heaters is that they need almost no maintenance! Because the oil is sealed inside during manufacture, it never needs to be replaced. As long as you keep the heater surfaces clean and dust-free, you shouldn’t run into any problems.

However, it is worth noting a few safety tips no matter the type of heater you use. As oil heaters run on electricity it is important that you follow all operating instructions carefully. For example, it is not recommended using an extension cable with an electric heater as the wiring may not be capable of handling the heater’s load. This is even more important to bear in mind when using an electric oil heater as the electricity is responsible for heating up a substance that is volatile.

Another thing to consider is the risk of leaking, albeit very small. As column heaters are sealed units there should be no oil appearing on the surface of the radiator. However, some people note a small for the first few times they are used. This could be because there are tiny particles of oil present on the radiator from when it was filled, or that the paint used gives off a chemical-like odor. It’s a good idea to test your heater in an area with good air flow and ventilation prior to using it in a small space.

If, however, you choose a poorly-made oil heater you might find it suffers from leaks further down the line. Leaks can manifest themselves in obvious and not-so-obvious ways. A non-obvious leak might mean that oil is seeping just enough to be present on the surface of the heater and therefore cause an unpleasant odor. It is recommended that you check your heater for leaks if you notice a smell. A big leak is very rare and it won’t go unnoticed. Leaks can be quite costly if it means you need to change flooring surfaces in your home so this is certainly something to bear in mind when choosing which product to buy.
